Why You Feel Like You’re Posting Into the Void

At least your grandma commented on your video and told you how cool you are 😎

When I first started creating content (and the last time I posted something 😅), I’d hit “publish” and then immediately check my phone every 10 minutes like I was waiting for a text back from a crush. And every time, crickets. No likes, no comments, no shares. It felt like I was yelling into an empty room.

If you’ve ever felt the same, you’re not alone. Early engagement is almost always low. Not because your content is bad, but because people don’t know to care yet. Trust and attention take time.

Here’s the good news: you don’t need hundreds of likes for your content to matter. You just need the right people to notice. And the way to make that happen is to flip your mindset: focus on giving value first. Instead of thinking, “Why isn’t anyone engaging with me?” ask, “How can I engage with them first?”

A few simple visibility boosters you can use right away:

Comment intentionally

  • Instead of waiting for people to come to you, show up in their world. Leave thoughtful comments on posts from other local businesses, creators, or even your own customers.

  • We underestimate how many people read the comments more than they look at a post, don’t forget to do this!

Invite conversation.

  • End your posts with a CTA to engage (“What’s your go-to lunch spot in town?”). People are more likely to answer than they are to click “like.”

Shout someone out

  • Feature another business or person in your post. Not only does it give them a reason to engage, but it also shows your audience that you’re connected and supportive.

  • Don’t underestimate the power of uplifting a friend or another business. Life is easier when we work together and this applies on social too

Follow up offline

  • Mention your content in real conversations, “Hey, I posted about this yesterday, curious what you think.” Sometimes the bridge between online and real life is what gets the ball rolling.

Remember, building momentum takes consistency. That “empty room” you’re posting into? It slowly fills up the more you show up with value. One day you’ll look around and realize it’s not empty anymore—it’s full of people who trust you because you kept showing up.
