What Happens When You Aren't Consistent With Your Content?

(Be sure to check out our new video on Youtube based on this newsletter!)

So I made a goof..

Last week, I had mis-scheduled my newsletter and unknowingly, didn’t send one out last monday. I’m very sorry but hopefully you checked your email that morning and thought “Wonder where The Content Marketing Lab is today?”

If not that’s okay! I’ll forgive you - this time - however it got me thinking, what’s the worst that could happen for skipping a week, or forgeting to make a post? Well not to spoil anything, but it’s not the end of the world, but I certainly wouldn’t make a habit of it.

What the Algorithm Thinks About Inconsistency

Social media algorithms don’t “hate” you for missing a few days (or even weeks). They’re not emotional, they just show content to people who engage with it.

If you come back with a strong, engaging post, it can still perform.
The downside is that less frequent posting means fewer opportunities to be shown—which can slow your growth. But it’s not unrecoverable.

What Your Audience Thinks

Your audience is a little different, they do notice or they’ll forget about you.

When you disappear for a while, it signals:

  • Maybe you’re not active or still open.

  • Maybe you don’t have anything new to share.

  • Or maybe you’re not as reliable as a competitor who is showing up consistently.

You won’t be forgotten by force but rather by your attention being overtaken by others.

Consistency Is Best Practice, Not Life or Death

Here’s what I think:

  • Consistency helps. It keeps the algorithm fed, trains your audience to expect your content, and builds trust.

  • Inconsistency isn’t the end of the world. One dry month won’t tank your brand forever.

  • Consistency is the formula for compounding growth.

The real key is: don’t make inconsistency a habit.
Take a break if you need to, but come back with content that’s worth watching, reading, or engaging with.

What Is The Opportunity With Consistency?

The only direction to go is up:

  • It’s not just neutral or bad, there are positive aspects. Being consistent has compounding effects, every post does not fight for themselves, they work together.

  • More content means more opportunity to be found. Think of your online presence as your own personal wikipedia page for your business. Every time you post you add a reference to your page showing who you are and what you’re about. And when a potential customer or client comes along, this is the data they will sift through when trying to make their decision

Key Takeaway:
You don’t need to be perfect, you just need to be present. Focus on creating good content, and if you miss a week, don’t panic. Just pick back up and keep going.

I almost forgot to mention, part of the reason I didn’t notice the missed newsletter is that I’ve been working on a video series based on these newsletters! Be sure to visit our Youtube page here!
